Dr. Armin Weinberg, 1964

“My Heights High School years provided me the foundation to put my father’s favorite saying into practice as a mentor to students, faculty and advocates … do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do!”

Armin was a Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Director of the Chronic Disease Research Center, Co-founder of the Intercultural Cancer Council, founding board member of C-Change and many other advocacy, research and service organizations. Throughout his career he focused on translating discoveries in prevention, screening, treatment and control activities to state, national and international initiatives in both cancer and cardiovascular disease. He spearheaded partnerships in the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Israel on the health effects of radiation. His current focus is now mentoring students in the medical humanities program at Rice University as they help build an archive at the McGovern Historical Research Center related to both cancer health disparities and radiation effects and events.

In recognition of his interest in and achieving impact in the community he was the recipient of the American Cancer Society ‘s Humanitarian Award, George & Barbara Bush Collaboration Award from C-Change, American Jewish Committee’s Academicians Award, National Patient Advocate Foundation’s National Health Care Hero Award, State of Israel Bonds’s Maimonides Award, Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Jill Ireland Award, Texas Cancer Council’s Gib Lewis Award for Public Education, Texas School Health Association’s Distinguished Service Award and Volunteer Houston’s Lifetime Member Award.

Achievements

• Principal Investigator/Project Director of more than 170 grants and contracts including EDICT (Eliminating Disparities in Clinical Trials)
• Authored over 100 peer reviewed publications, served as an editor and reviewer for 6 journals as well a various grant and funding organizations
• Developed innovative computer assisted instruction programs for medical & continuing education
• Led the Education Division of the first National Cardiovascular Research and Demonstration Center
• Founding board member of the Texas Hadassah Medical Research Foundation, the International Consortium for Research on the Health Effects of Radiation and the Intercultural Cancer Council addressing health disparities
