Thomas P. Royer, 1986

“Being inducted into the Cleveland Heights Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame is an incredible honor. It connects me to Heights’ legacy of excellence, reminds me of the “life-sized role models” who shaped me, and gives me the chance to inspire students just as I was inspired.”

“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.” ~ Desmond Tutu

For Tom Royer, Beech Brook is more than a career—it’s a family legacy. His grandparents were house parents there in the 1950s and 60s, and as a child, Royer spent weekends on campus playing alongside the kids receiving services. Those early experiences instilled in him the value of service and community, shaping the leader he is today.

Royer officially joined Beech Brook in 1991, starting in the School-Based program and working directly with struggling kids and families. Over the years, he rose through a variety of leadership roles before becoming CEO in 2017. Having spent his entire career at Beech Brook, Royer brings a unique perspective: he knows the work from the ground up. Under his leadership, Beech Brook has been recognized as a Top Workplace by Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer for six years running. He is deeply committed to culture, collaboration, and ensuring staff feel supported—believing that caring for employees directly impacts the care children and families receive. Those who work with him know every decision he makes comes back to one guiding question: What’s best for the kids and families?

Royer is also a skilled communicator who connects policy to real life through decades of frontline experience. He speaks with clarity and warmth about the complex challenges facing children, parents, and communities, grounding conversations in both research and firsthand stories. His expertise spans mental health, parenting, child welfare, and building stronger communities. Whether the topic is difficult or hopeful, he brings balance, humor, and a deep belief that outcomes can improve when we focus on what truly works.

And if you want to see his passion spill over? Ask about the Cleveland Browns. Royer hasn’t missed a game in more than 45 years—a testament to his loyalty, resilience, and perhaps a touch of stubborn optimism.
